The Misbah-ul-Haq-led Islamabad United had an excellent previous season in which they defied odds to overcome their opposition and win the title. They hadn’t begun the competition as favourites by any stretch but by the time they ended it, Misbah had done what he has often done with the national side – inspired his side in his own understated way to help them become title-winners.
Question now is whether they can surprise their opponents yet again. Now, one isn’t exactly calling them a Leicester City story from the English Premier League but that doesn’t mean things cannot go horribly pear-shaped for them in the second season after such a resounding success in the first. They will need to be wary of that because combine an injury or two to their crucial players, and other teams reading their game better this season is all it could take for them to unravel away.
The negatives aside, the team looks to have a decent squad, what with all-rounder Shane Watson expected to come out opening the innings with Dwayne Smith with Sharjeel Khan somewhere in the top three as well. One of Ben Duckkett or Sam Billings will get a go, and while Andre Russell has been ruled out of the competition after his doping violation ban, there’s always a Steven Finn they can go for.
If the pitch is slower than usual, Samuel Badree could take that place that Russell has left in the side.
Taking them on is a side that a lot of fans are waiting to watch with bated breath. The Peshawar Zalmi do not have Shahid Afridi leading them this time after he handed over the reins of the team to Darren Sammy but more importantly, his fans would have loved the way he did that – speaking of the respect that his side had for the former West Indian captain who was dumped from his national side for being outspoken.
T Dilshan has come in as a late replacement and might get a chance to open the innings, and he will have Mohammad Hafeez for company. Kamran Akmal will have a role to play in the middle-order while one of Marlon Samuels or Andre Fletcher could be brought in as well. Chris Jordan could lead their pace bowling department if the management needs to bolster those resources but Samit Patel’s spin bowling skills could come handy.
The Zalmis will be missing Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan, both of whom are in India playing in a Test match, which does weaken their line-up and allows the United to start off as bit of favourites. Islamabad United vs Peshawar Zalmi match prediction is placed below.
